2. Line and staff organisation

In business practice staff positions are added to the line structure. They prepare information for decisions but have no authority to make decisions. They are specialists and help the line managers to carry out their functions more efficiently. They offer advice, assistance and support. An example for a staff position is a legal advisor who supports the managing director of the company.

The main advantage of line and staff organisation is that expert knowledge is available but there are still clear lines of command. Disadvantages are that the specialists do not have to take responsibility for the suggestions they make and that they may have an uncontrollable influence because of their proximity to the managers.
