1. Line Organisation

In a line organisation superior units have the authority to give commands to subordinate units. In a single-line system each person receives commands only from one person above and gives commands only to one person below. People on the same level have no authority over each other. They can only communicate through their immediate superior unit.

 The main advantages of this type of structure are clear lines of command and clear lines of reporting as well as clear assignment of tasks and responsibility. The main disadvantages are that this type of structure is time consuming and inflexible. It may take time before orders from the top level are carried out at a lower level. Superiors have to have a lot of expert knowledge and have to take on a lot of responsibility. Therefore, they could feel overburdened.
